UNAIR Faculty of Law Alumni, Cristian Luo, Receives Three Prestigious Nominations at the 2025 Thomson Reuters’ Asian Legal Business (ALB) Law Awards

FH Public Relations (11/06/2025) | Having previously made history as the student who delivered the first International Moot Court victory for the Faculty of Law, Universitas Airlangga (FH UNAIR), Cristian Luo has now taken another step further in his professional career. At just 28 years old, the 2018 UNAIR Faculty of Law alumnus has earned several prestigious nominations from the Thomson Reuters’ Asian Legal Business (ALB) Law Awards, an awards event widely recognized as a barometer of legal professional achievement in the Asian region. This year, Cristian was nominated in three categories: In-House Lawyer of the Year, Young Lawyer of the Year (In-House) at the 2025 ALB Indonesia Law Awards, and Energy and Resources In-House Team of the Year at the 2025 ALB South East Asia Law Awards. These nominations reflect his quality, dedication, and consistent work in the national energy sector.

As a leading legal and business information platform under Thomson Reuters, ALB sets strict evaluation standards in determining nominations. The jury assesses candidates based on their professional track record, leadership capacity, and strategic contributions to their respective institutions. In this context, Cristian’s achievements demonstrate that his work in the energy industry is not only technically significant but also impactful on corporate governance at the national and regional levels. Cristian understands that this success was not achieved alone; he emphasizes that it is the result of a combination of hard work, opportunity, and the support of dozens of people who have been present throughout his career. In particular, he highlights the role of mentors, who have been fundamental to the development of his professional character.

Cristian specifically mentioned Hanna Meliana, a mentor he met while pursuing his career at Hiswara Bunjamin & Tandjung, a renowned law firm handling numerous corporate cases and large-scale transactions. From Hanna, Cristian learned that youth is no excuse for lowering professional standards. He was encouraged to work alongside partners at major law firms and C-level representatives at multinational corporations that served as his clients. “Even though I’m young, I have to ensure the quality of my work is on par with senior professionals. Not because I want to compete, but because I’m committed to upholding the same standards,” Cristian explained. This advice remains a working principle he adheres to today and has helped propel him to international recognition.

Since studying at the Faculty of Law, UNAIR, Cristian has been known as a student with strong analytical skills and high dedication. Under the guidance of Dr. Nilam Andalia Kurniasari, S.H., LL.M., achieved international success in the Maritime Arbitration Moot at the National University of Singapore in 2017. That same year, he led the Faculty of Law (FH) UNAIR to its first national victory in the International Humanitarian Law Moot Court Competition, and then represented Indonesia internationally alongside Prof. Koesrianti, S.H., LL.M., Ph.D. In addition to his active competitive work, Cristian also holds leadership roles in numerous organizations, including Head of Officers of the International Law Students Association, Commissioner General of the Airlangga Young Jurists Society, and Head of the Public Relations Division of the Indonesian Student Law and Constitutional Debate Institute.

His busy schedule in competitions and organizations did not prevent Cristian from achieving academic success. He successfully graduated with cum laude honors, demonstrating his ability to effectively balance academic and external activities. Now, with internationally recognized professional achievements, Cristian is a living example that education, discipline, and the courage to seize opportunities can open doors to a successful legal career. Her story not only makes UNAIR Faculty of Law proud but also inspires a generation of students preparing to enter the competitive world of legal professionals.

UNAIR FH Alumnus Holds Strategic Position in LPI and is Recognized by the International Legal World

FH Public Relations (05/27/25) | An extraordinary role has been made by an alumnus of the Faculty of Law (FH) Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR), Erwandi Hendarta, S.H., LL.M., M.B.A. His name is now in the spotlight after being appointed as a member of the Supervisory Board of the Investment Management Institute (LPI). Not only that, Erwandi was also named as one of Indonesia’s top lawyers, included in the prestigious ranks of “The A List Indonesia’s Top Lawyer 2025” according to the Asia Law Business Journal. His success story is real proof that legal education at UNAIR is able to produce quality professionals with a solid foundation.

Erwandi Hendarta is not a new name in the world of law and finance. With more than 35 years of experience, he has become a capable figure in handling complex legal issues, especially in the financial sector. His appointment as a member of the LPI Supervisory Board is no coincidence. The long and strict selection process, involving important institutions such as the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of SOEs, is proof that his capacity and capability are recognized at the national level. “This selection is not easy. The names of candidates must go through strict screening by the Minister of Finance and the Minister of SOEs,” said Erwandi, as quoted from the official UNAIR website, Saturday, May 24, 2025.

Erwandi emphasized two main elements that are the foundation of his success, namely, capacity and capability. He likened capacity to a cup that continues to be enlarged through the desire to learn and broaden our horizons. “The bigger the cup, the greater our capacity to learn and be curious,” he explained. Meanwhile, capability is the result of long experience and the application of knowledge in the real world. This philosophy is Erwandi’s guide in navigating a challenging career.

Erwandi’s success is not only a personal pride, but also an inspiration for FH UNAIR students and alumni. He advised the younger generation to continue to hone their capacity and capability to compete at the global level. “Never stop learning. The world of law and finance continues to change, and we must be ready to adapt,” he said. This message is in line with FH UNAIR’s vision to produce highly competitive graduates, rooted in the values of justice and morality.

Erwandi’s appointment to the LPI Supervisory Board and recognition as a national top lawyer, including in “The A List Indonesia’s Top Lawyer 2025” by the Asia Law Business Journal, is a reflection of how education at UNAIR is able to produce influential figures. His work not only strengthens UNAIR’s reputation as one of the oldest and most prominent law faculties in Indonesia, but also confirms that its alumni are able to make real contributions to the nation.

This means that Indonesians traveling to these eight countries can now make transactions with just one QRIS scan, without having to bother exchanging foreign currency or carrying large amounts of cash.

“This is not only a technological leap, but also a leap of international trust in our payment system,” said Filianingsih.
