History

Airlangga University’s Faculty of Law is one of the oldest law faculties in Indonesia. At first, in 1952, it was a branch of the Faculty of Law, Gadjah Mada University, Yogyakarta. Then in 1954, the establishment of Airlangga University was inaugurated by the President of the Republic of Indonesia, Ir. Soekarno, then the Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Dentistry, and Faculty of Law were established as the first three faculties of Airlangga University. Some of the leading Law Scholars in Indonesia, including Prof. Mr. A.G. Pringgodigdo (State Secretary of the Republic of Indonesia in President Soekarno’s Cabinet), became the founder of the Faculty of Law, Universitas Airlangga. With an excellent reputation in implementing higher education in law, since the 1970s, the Faculty of Law, Universitas Airlangga, has been trusted by the Ministry of National Education to become a supervisor in developing other law faculties in eastern Indonesia.

The Faculty of Law, Universitas Airlangga, has set a vision to become a leading law faculty in the Asian region that is independent, innovative, and adaptive, a pioneer of legal education that produces graduates oriented as professional juries with high competence and morality.

To achieve this vision, the Faculty of Law, Universitas Airlangga, realizes that legal education is not only an academic matter but must prepare students with skills in practicing law. Therefore, the Faculty of Law at Airlangga University has a law education curriculum that combines theory and practicum to equip students with comprehensive knowledge and understanding of legal theory and practice. In addition, the Faculty of Law at Airlangga University has responded to the challenges of globalization by preparing students to face the new legal order. The Faculty of Law, Airlangga University, constantly strives to develop and update the education of the legal profession through various trainings and legal research conducted by academic staff.

As an internationalization effort, the Legal Studies Program (S1) received ASEAN University Network Quality Assurance (AUN-QA) certification in 2016, which shows that the quality assurance system for academic administration in the study program has been appropriately implemented and meets 15 AUN-QA criteria. Then in 2019, the Bachelor of Law Study Program obtained international accreditation from the Foundation for International Business Administration Accreditation (FIBAA) based in Germany, and the Master of Law Study Program in 2022.

S2 Master of Notary

Based on the Decree of the Chancellor of Airlangga University Number A.II.4091/ Rector/27/UA/1980, January 1, 1980, concerning the Notary Specialist I Study Program at Airlangga University, the Faculty of Law, Universitas Airlangga opened a Notary Specialist I Education Program with a total of 117 students. From its establishment until 1994, in the teaching and learning process at the Notary Specialist I Study Program, lecturers were always involved, not only from the Faculty of Law, University of Airlangga, but also from outside the Faculty of Law, University of Airlangga, namely notaries individually (meaning not through professional organizations), and also from non-notaries, for example from the tax office.

It was only in 1994, on November 26, to be precise, that the Charter of Cooperation was signed between the Chancellor of Airlangga University and the Management of the Central Indonesian Notary Association in Jakarta, and between the Head of the Notary Studies Program at the Faculty of Law, Airlangga University and the Regional Management of the East Java Indonesian Notary Association. With this collaboration, a notary’s involvement in organizing the teaching and learning system at the Faculty of Law, Airlangga University’s Notary Specialist I Study Program is carried out through a professional organization.

Furthermore, in 2001, based on the Decree of the Directorate General of Higher Education, Ministry of National Education of the Republic of Indonesia Number 78/Dikti/Kep/2000, the status of the Notary Specialist Education Program was declared to be a Notary Masters Study Program.
