On Monday (29/10), students who attended the International Privat Law course, received a guest lecture from Dr. Sheela Jayabalan, as a lecturer at the Faculty of Law, Universiti Teknologi Mara. The lecture has taken place at Room 206 Building A Faculty of Law, Airlangga University.
The lecture given was titled “The Problem of Child Marriage”. In the lecture, Dr. Sheela highlighted the main problems related to marriage with minors.
According to her, child marriage has more negative impacts compared to positive impacts. Ironically, the Convention on the Rights of the Child does not prohibit child marriage. On the other hand, even the United States, which has been the main exponent of upholding human rights, in fact still has not ratified the convention and also still allows underage marriage.
He argued, even if the underage marriage does not have to be legally prohibited, the said case must be strictly regulated. She hopes that students who take part in the study will be more aware of the impact of Child marriage and can share their insights with the community.
